In the 40's, groups of water sports enthusiasts used to come to the Uruguayan coast of Carmelo, who would come with their boats and moor at the municipal dock of the city.
From a group of approximately 15 friends, some of them Argentinian and others Uruguayan, the idea of creating a place to moor and meet arose. Soon after, one of the members of this group presented an ambitious project for a dock and a building that would be the Club's headquarters.
In spite of the fact that it was a very complicated time due to the fact that the world was going through World War II, the idea gained strength and the steps to finance the project began. From the Uruguayan side, the necessary steps were taken before government agencies and a state loan was obtained. This contribution, added to the personal loans from the Argentine nautical workers, allowed the project to begin.
Thus, a 4000 m2 plot of land was acquired, located in the so-called 'Vuelta de Quiñonez', up the Las Vacas stream on its right bank. Also the dredging of the channel that surrounds the Sola Island was negotiated before the Uruguayan authorities, including its buoy, to allow the crossing of boats from the Argentine margins to the Uruguayan ones.
On May 25, 1943, at 11:30 a.m., the foundation stone of what would become the Yacht Club Carmelo was laid. The construction works of the dock and the Club's headquarters were completed in approximately 18 months, and the building was officially inaugurated on February 12, 1945. The opening ceremony was followed by a banquet attended by 150 people, which began with remarks by the first 'Commodore of the Club', Mr. William Hope.
From that moment and throughout its history, the Yacht Club Carmelo has seen several transformations and structural improvements, besides being a place where many families and several generations have enjoyed unique and unforgettable moments.
